The focus of my practice is travel and responding to location. I take written notes and draw directly from the subject. I then make paintings from these in my studio. I have made work about trips to Armenia, Mexico and Canada. Residencies in Cyprus in 1999 and then 2001-2 represent my most important connection with the landscape. Likewise, aside from London where I live and work, two recent trips to New York have provided city inspirations.

I look for distinctive shapes and objects. These can change during the course of the painting and I aim for them to seem familiar rather than recognisable. The idea of the painting appears, or returns to me, often through a physical paring down from my source material. Though un-peopled, the landscapes, buildings and objects often intimate the memory of a relationship.
